Service & Community - Rebecca

My involvement with nonprofit work has really developed over the past two years. I grew up doing a bit of community work with my church and youth group. We would deliver food and have toy drives for different communities around our church. It wasn’t until I joined AmeriCorps where I learned how big of a scale nonprofit work does for communities.

While doing the work out on the east coast and in the south, I automatically thought about how much of an impact nonprofits have back home, in LA. I started doing research and came across the Jubilee Year! Being a part of JYLA has helped me get more hands-on experience in working with the community I grew up in. Serving as a case manager with St. Joseph Center has helped me learn a lot about the housing section and how non-profits are part of a robust response to homelessness. I hope to learn more and continue to make connections with the community for the rest of my time in JYLA!

Moving to Hollywood was definitely a change. I have lived with different communities in the past, but it is always a new experience with new community members. So when I heard I was living with four other people, I was definitely excited, but also pretty scared. The community I joined here in Hollywood has really been a blessing. I have so much love for them and they are amazing individuals. Learning about each other and sharing each other's cultures and experiences has been my favorite part.

Living with an intentional community is definitely not always easy, but I do believe that it has helped each community member grow and learn about one another.

Living in Hollywood, with amazing housemates and an amazing service site has been a dream, and I am so excited to see what the rest of this year has in store for me and the community!
