A Year of Friendship - Vanessa

Jubilee Year has tested my capacities in all aspects. I’ve learned about patience and adaptability while being here and friendship and communication have become essential in my life as adjusting to a new environment with new people can be so hard.

This year, I have learned so much about friendship. I can honestly say I’ve never expected to be surrounded by such awesome people who support and listen to you when you are feeling under the weather, homesick, or simply exhausted from working hard. I love my housemates - who have become my friends - and I love my students and coworkers!

Here is a small project that I created for a student that was going away. It reflects the staff and students in the class that were there to support him and wish him luck on his future endeavors. I love being creative and I loved making this piece because I work so closely with this small group of students. I tried to capture their essence and personalities in the piece.

This project was a result of a second sunday topic, Engaging in the Arts, where we discussed art and expression. Art to me is an expression of self and it can symbolize emotions that are being experienced at certain points of one’s life. A fellow corps member, Cynthia, and I collaborated on this idea and we both ended up creating two different expressions about our experience being Jubilee Year fellows. While her's was comprised of words that described her feelings and goals with the program, mine was a reminder about not forgetting my roots and staying focused on my goals!
